Home Decorating Tips
You know what they say about not believing everything you hear? The same is true about home decorating!
While there are certain rules and guiding principles when it comes to decorating, you don’t have to follow everything to the letter. Home decorating is a fun project and a great time to unleash you creative side. So yes, it’s definitely okay to bend a few rules!
Myth: Decorative pillows should strictly be kept in odd numbers.
It doesn’t have to be perfectly symmetrical for it to work. It’s really more about what you feel works in the space. Pillows don’t have to match perfectly as well. Try mixing it up by alternating pillows in different patterns in a similar color scheme.
Myth: Trends should only be incorporated in small pieces that can easily be replaced.
While it’s understandable that you may feel hesitant to go all out with trends, it shouldn’t matter if the trend really speaks to you. If, for example, you’re into metallics, you don’t have to limit yourself to a few small pieces. Incorporate it on other parts, like cabinets or furniture.
Myth: You can only choose one pattern to be the focal point of a room.
When it comes to patterns, push your creativity! With a bit of artful paring, you can showcase as many as five different patterns in one room. The key is to keep the color scheme similar and play around with scale.
Myth: Ceilings should only be painted white.
Don’t neglect your “fifth wall”! Painting your ceiling a dramatic color can draw the eye upward and adds a touch of whimsy and flair to a room.
Myth: The focal point of a room should be the most expensive piece.
A big price tag doesn’t necessarily make a piece worthy of the spotlight. When choosing a focal point for your space, pick the piece with the most character, regardless of the price or value.
