Color Psychology for Your Interior Colors

Posted on September 27, 2020

Whether for a DIY project or for a professional makeover, we can all agree that choosing colors is one of the most fun and exciting parts. But be careful not to get carried away. Know that it’s not all about what looks good or what’s in. It can also be about your personality and what mood you want your living space to imbibe. It’s called Color Psychology. Read on to learn more.

About Color Psychology

A study says that people make a subconscious judgment about an environment or a space within less than two minutes of initial viewing. And what largely influences that judgment is said to be color.

See, color is more than just a visual. It’s an experience and even a form of non-verbal communication that can affect mood and emotion. As what most interior design folks would say, it is a useful tool in layering your personality into a space.

Choosing Colors: More than What Looks Good

You can always choose to dress up your room or space in such a way that it mirrors or takes off from those that trend on IG and Pinterest. But ask yourself these: will it be something that you’ll feel comfortable in? Will you be able to connect instantly?

Choosing a color for your living space isn’t just about what you think will look good. It’s also about how you want your space to feel when you or others are in it.

Colors and their Impact on Moods

As previously mentioned, you can control a lot of things in your space with just color. You can make a small room appear spacious, a wall look longer, or you can make people talk!

It’s all in choosing the right colors for your space. To give you some samples check our this list of hues and what they cue.

  • Blue, the color of the sky and ocean, is calming and cool. It works best for areas of rest such as the bedroom. Those who like blue are said to be loyal, friendly and trustworthy.
  • Yellow is the chirpy color of freedom and optimism. Experts would use the color on spaces such as a child’s playroom or study where positivity, stimulation and inspiration would be needed..
  • The color of confidence, excitement and energy, Red is the most psychologically stimulating of colors. If you or someone you know likes the color, it means that you or they are passionate, outgoing and courageous. Red can be used on an accent wall to liven up spaces.
  • Much like yellow but with a more relaxed quality to it, purple also stimulates the imagination. Countless reads say that it’s the color of royalty, luxury and wealth and that those who like it tend to be creative, wise and romantic.
  • Also calm and relaxing, green comes with a subtle and refreshing energy when you compare it to blue. It is usually the color for balance, stability and persistence.
  • The color of the earth, brown is associated with security and contentment. Those who like the color tend to find comfort in nature and in the simple things.
  • White is usually for youth and cleanliness. Warmer shades of it can help make a room feel cozier, while cooler shades are likely to give off a more formal feel.
  • Black breathes elegance, mystery and power, and those who prefer the color are said to be ambitious and sophisticated.
