Mini Projects to Get You Closer to your Dream Home

Posted on October 2, 2020

Dream homes aren’t built in a day but who says you have to go big all at once? With the help of Island Paints, you can get closer to your Pinterest-worthy home, one mini-project at a time!

Building your dream house

On some level, we’ve all pictured what our dream houses would be like. While some are blessed with the opportunity to build theirs from the ground up, some have to work with the spaces they already have. And the idea of a full-on home makeover can be a little overwhelming to think about in terms of scale and price.

But you don’t have to go one time-big time on this; you can take on one project or one room at a time at your own pace. By doing what you can little by little, you can be on your way to living in your dream space.

To help give you inspiration, here are some easy mini-projects you can work on yourself:

  1. Update your wall colors.

This is the easiest way to change up your living space that can have the most visible impact. New paint color can change the whole ambiance of the room, make it look larger or smaller, and can even affect your mood. (Read: Does the Color of a Room Really Affect Your Mood?)

Working on a budget? Painting your walls is relatively inexpensive and with the right tools and prep work, the payoff can be outstanding. Browse the Island Paints website for more tips on how to paint your home on a budget.

  2. Work on greenery.

Whether it’s indoors, outdoors, or both, one of the easiest things you can do to freshen up your home is to add greenery. Gardening and raising plants has grown quite popular, with more and more people discovering how plants have certain health benefits aside from their aesthetic value. Greenery is inexpensive and looks amazing, plus it adds texture and a natural element to any space.

  3. Consider wallpaper.

Aside from paint, wallpaper is a good decorating tool that can completely transform a room or space– and you don’t even have to do the whole room. Consider covering the main wall behind your bed, or add an accent wall to your living room with a geometric or large-print paper. Wallpapers are also good for brightening up spaces behind closed doors, like the interiors of a linen cupboard or a walk-in closet.

  4. Bring in good lighting.

Never underestimate the power of good lighting. A brightly lit room appears airy, open, and welcoming; while a poorly lit one can look small, dark, and cramped. Consider layering light at different levels, like placing tall floor lamps in dark corners. If you’re working with new lights, it helps to know how lighting affects interior paint color as well.

  5. Upgrade your window treatments.

Windows aren’t normally focal points and generally kept neutral, but giving it an update can work wonders. Adding decorative trims, tassels, or fabric panels to plain curtains can brighten up space, while tired curtains and blinds can easily let a room down.

The key to successful home projects is prep work but it’s always easier with the right materials. Like in the case of painting, surface preparation is never quick, but utilizing the right tools such as Island Super Kinis Skim Coat definitely lightens the task and makes sure that your paint job lasts long.
