Good lighting helps make your house a home. It’s for tasks you do around the house, aesthetics, and it can even make you feel safer and more comfortable. It can make or break the ambiance of any room, and it allows you to enjoy your home to its full potential. Needless to say, getting your lighting right can go a long way. Here are a few tips and tricks that you should keep in mind when refurbishing the lighting scheme of your home.

Consider your lighting needs

Each room in your house need a variety of lighting, decide on what mood you want to set and a task your lighting needs to serve. These are often overlooked, but are highly important throughout your house. Task lighting is often used close-up work. Accent lighting highlights special features while ambient lighting is used for ambiance and overall lighting of a space.

Diversify your lighting

What’s the quickest fix for great lighting at home? Utilize a range of lighting in varied heights and locations. For areas like the kitchen, bedroom, and living room, use multiple sources of lights that can help you in your daily activities. Try using decorative fluorescent fixtures for your kitchen countertop, and one over your bathroom mirror. Place a good reading lamp by your bed – but not directly at it. Remember that bright rooms make your home feel more spacious. Also, consider changing your switches to dimmers.

Go for energy efficient lighting

LED lights are very good eco options and it can also help you save a lot on your electrical bills. Also, be sure to usher in some sunlight. Natural light has tons of therapeutic benefits and it can instantly brighten you and your home’s mood.

Provide lighting for safety

Keep in mind that stairways and halls must have good lighting for safety reasons. Prevent accidents from happening by installing lights from top to bottom with switches from both places. For the hallways, place lighting fixtures every 8 to 10 feet.

It doesn’t only have to be utilitarian

Choose lighting fixtures that can complete the total look of your home. Be sure that everything goes well with the motif of each room. For areas such as the living and dining room, where you will be entertaining a lot of guests, go for decorative lamps and consider chandeliers and accent lighting.
