How to Use Marine Epoxy Putty for Your Next Building Project
Posted on December 3, 2021
Depending on the area you live in, it can be helpful if you protect certain surfaces against elements of nature like water. It’s a known fact that water can enter some structures, and cause extensive damage or even health problems when the area/s are not protected enough.
The good news is, there are marine-grade products that have been specifically formulated to withstand water and its possible damaging effects. You can find marine-grade products like base coats and top coats, paints, stains, primers, or varnish. All of these products have their specific benefits against water and can be applied on various surfaces, depending on their intended use.
Marine epoxy putty is a type of marine-grade item you can encounter. While it’s typically associated with the construction and repair of boats and ships, you can use this item when building your home too. Continue reading for a brief explanation of what a marine epoxy putty is, and how to use it properly.
What Is a Marine Epoxy Putty?
A marine epoxy putty, like Island Paints’ Durable Epoxy Marine Non-Sag Putty, can consist of two-component, epoxy polyamide-based compounds. In some instances, depending on the manufacturer, they can be purchased already premixed.
For this particular product, the compounds are in separate containers upon purchasing, and you have to combine them according to the desired ratios so it ends up as a putty.
Once combined, this particular marine epoxy putty product can be used as an adhesive for wood and other substrates, and applications on boat hulls. It can work great as a patching compound for epoxy and selected paint systems and shows bonding strength and tough cured film. Moreover, it can work well on vertical and overhead surfaces once it’s applied.
What Makes Marine Epoxy Putty Beneficial?
A marine epoxy putty’s strength may be traced to the resins of the same name that the product is made of. In general, marine epoxy resins are known to have a strong coating, sealing, and bonding capabilities.
These types of resins can adhere to a variety of materials and surfaces, resist well against damage, utilize less toxic hardeners, and have a low shrinkage rate. Their shelf life is also quite admirable, as out of the various types of resins, marine epoxy resins have a long shelf life.
Marine epoxy resins also deliver water-resistant abilities. This is why these have been extensively used in the repair, maintenance, and creation of boats. Plus, marine epoxy resins have been tagged as good for use on materials like PVC, fiberglass, ceramic, wood, concrete, and/or some types of plastic and materials.
How to Use Marine Epoxy Putty
Before you use marine epoxy putty, wear protective safety equipment like gloves, masks, or other needed safety gear. Moreover, don’t forget these safety and handling precautions that’ll greatly help you avoid injuries that can delay the project:
- Avoid contact with skin and eyes, as any of the products can irritate these areas.
- Work in a well-ventilated area when using any sort of epoxy resin. Try to keep doors, windows, or hatchways open when you’re working with the product.
- Do not dispose of the products together with household garbage.
- Do not empty any of the products into drains. Be informed that the base (Part A) can be toxic to marine life. Instead, dispose of this material and its container at hazardous or special waste collection points.
- If swallowed, seek medical advice immediately and show this container or label to the doctor or professional.
- When storing, keep the containers tightly sealed and out of the reach of children.
- Store products in an area that’s not above 35 degrees Celsius.
Once you’re ready, combine 1 part of the base (Part A) and 1 part of the hardener (Part B). After these are thoroughly mixed, carefully apply the mixture along the underlay of the marine plywood or on the surface you’re working with using a putty knife. Then, alot the following times for drying the product:
- Dry to touch: 30 minutes
- Dry to handle: Seven hours
- Dry hard: 24 hours
Afterward, you can apply other marine-grade paints or stains that you want to finish the surface. If you have additional questions, feel free to talk to a professional who can properly guide you and provide more information about marine epoxy putty’s uses and benefits.
A marine epoxy putty may not be the first choice when it comes to building or improving homes, but with a little research and innovation, you can make it work for your project.
