Home Decorating Tips
Decorating your home for the holidays is tradition. The nativity scenes, the parols, the red and green lights, they all brings us holiday cheer. The easy part is choosing the color and theme; figuring out how to execute it is a little more tricky. So why not do something a little different this year with DIY Christmas decor? We’ve got some easy holiday decorations for you to try.
Painted Christmas Tree
Not a fan of bulky Christmas trees? You can opt for a two-dimenstional choice! Paint it on a blank panel, or if you’re not willing to commit a wall of your house, paint it on a 3 or 4-foot canvas!
You don’t have to be a professional artist to paint a Christmas tree. All you need is some green paint and you’re all set! Of course, you can add other colors to make it more festive, but a minimalistic tree can also bring Christmas cheer.
To make it easy, you can prime your surface. This will make the colors stand out and turn the background into a white Christmas.
Next, you can pencil in the outlines of the tree. This will make it easier for you to fill it in with paint. You may start with a tall triangle at the top and then make wider triangles as you go down. The triangle at the bottom should be the widest. Of course, you also have the freedom to design your own tree. If you prefer a one-big-triangle kind of tree, that works too!
After drawing your guide, you can paint in your tree with the color green. You can use different shades like Azalea’s Leaf, Bergamot, and Pale Marble from the Island Paints color palette. Or you can use other cool or warm colors like Mulberry and Terran Cotta.
You can also be creative and draw Christmas balls on your tree with paint, add glitter for tinsel, or stick actual Christmas ornaments on your painted tree.
Painted Ornaments
What else goes well on a Christmas tree? Christmas ornaments, of course! For your Christmas balls this year, why not add a little color with some paint?
All you’ll need is a plain Christmas ball to start. It can be white, red, green, or your favorite color. Just make sure it’s blank as it will be your canvas.
Next thing you need is your paint–here’s where you can get creative! You can paint with all the colors you like. This is especially true if your Christmas ball is white or even see-through. If you have a different color Christmas ball, you might want to check for complementing colors. For a guide, you can check here.
You can paint festive Christmas designs like Santa or his reindeers, or you can make it more personal and paint pictures of your friends and family! If you’re not too artistic, you can simply paint on their names. This will make it more personalized, and you might even want to give it away as (pre) Christmas presents.
Christmas Lantern
Christmas in the Philippines can’t be without the “parol” or Christmas lanterns shaped like stars. These can come in different shapes and sizes, and you can make one yourself too! Some people use old cartons, scratch paper, or plastic cups and bottles to craft their own parol. The possibilities are endless and you’ll find DIY home decor guides almost everywhere.
For those who aren’t too crafty, but would like to add a little more color in decorating your home for the holidays, you can also use a little paint to brighten up this Filipino Christmas decoration.
Most any local store offers Christmas lanterns during hte holiday season. All you have to do now is find a plain design so that you can add colors yourself!
Much like painted Christmas ornaments, you can add Christmas-themed drawings or more personal designs to your lantern. The only difference now is that your designs will light up! So paint on those santa hats and Christmas angels for a merry holiday!
Christmas Mason Jar
Mason jars are both functional and decorative. This holiday season, let’s make them a little more merry in the spirit of Christmas.
If you have some mini Christmas ornaments or even a roll of battery-powered fairy lights, putting them inside a mason jar is a cute and creative way to decorate your table. You can use them as centerpieces or you can even deck the halls with cheery mason jars on your kitchen counter.
If you want the cup to be more functional, you can also paint the glass with holiday colors. Sip your favorite Christmas drinks from your Christmas decoration, why not?
