4 Ideas for Your Garage Floor Revamp

Posted on February 10, 2021

Your garage is easily the toughest flooring in your house. So if you’re thinking of giving them a makeover, we’ve got a few good garage floor paint ideas you can consider trying!

Why should I paint my garage floor?

Okay, you may be thinking, if the garage floor takes a lot of use and abuse, what is the point in painting it? But that’s exactly why it’s a good idea. Because garage floors actually deal with a lot of abuse, from dripping oil to hot tires to dirt and sawdust, even the most pristine concrete garage floor can look like a mess after a few years.

There is a multitude of reasons to coat your garage floor. The most obvious reason: it just looks good. For one, it covers up any flaws and cracks in your concrete. Second, Ii makes your garage look cleaner and more put together, and with the right paint job, it can even make the space look brighter and more premium. Should you be selling in the future, a coated floor gives you better resale value as a coated floor may be more attractive to prospective buyers.

Get started: Garage floor paint ideas

Like with any other paint project, choosing the best garage floor option can be tricky. Of course, you want something that lives up to the overall look of your home but at the same time, it also has to be functional. Good garage floor coating should be able to deal with the tools, equipment, and heavy items you store in it, on top of having to handle the weight of your car and the occasional spill.

So in a way, this is a little limiting when it comes to choices unlike flooring options for other areas of the home, but it’s still worth a shot. With a little creativity and the right tools, you can have a garage floor that’s both good-looking and extra-durable.

Here are several flooring ideas you can try:

Concrete Sealer or Stain

If you happen to like your concrete floor but feel that it is starting to look worn, you can opt to coat your floor in something that enhances its look, rather than cover it up. This is where concrete sealer comes in.

Clear concrete sealer is one of the most affordable options and also one of easiest to apply. It’s basically a topical garage floor coating that helps protect against water, mild chemicals, oil, and road salts.

However, concrete sealer does not hide blemishes, so it’s best to use if your garage floor is stain- and crack- free to begin with. It adds protection to concrete stains and dyes, but cannot be used over existing paint or epoxy coating. Choose either a glossy or matte finish.

Concrete stain, on the other hand, is basically a sealer with pigments. When dry, it lets the existing concrete surface show through. Like a clear sealer, it’s if your existing garage floor is already in good shape.

Stain penetrates the concrete so it tends to outlast paint. Also, minor chips and scratches won’t show through. For easier application, look for water-based acrylic products.

Epoxy Paint

Epoxy floor paint is an extra-tough garage floor coating that can resist marring, chemicals, oil, and gasoline. Water-based epoxies are easy to apply and clean up with soap and water.

Applying an epoxy finish is a multi-step process but is very rewarding if done right. It is applied on a clean, crack-free floor, then sealed with a primer made for concrete.

Rubber tiles

If you’re hesitant to try paints, you can also opt for DIY-friendly rubber tiles that have interlocking edges and install without glues. They’re durable, resistant to chemicals, help even prevent leg fatigue and slips because of their anti-skid features. These usually come in many patterns and colors and it’s easy to replace if a tile is damaged.

Sheet Vinyl

There are vinyl sheets that are made specifically for garage floors and are a good low-cost option for an upgrade. They are extra thick and tough, plus they’re textured for traction and resistant to oils, gasoline, and cleaning fluids. Sheet vinyl is also relatively easy to install.

If you want to go the extra mile, you can also go with peel-and-stick vinyl tiles. It’s a little more laborious but you’ll be able to create your own looks and patterns.
