Cleaning Your Curtains

It’s amazing how adding curtains add character to rooms and make them come alive. But maintaining these pieces is a different story.

Curtains are pretty to look at, but they can be tricky to keep. These fabrics tend to absorb different household odors, like cooking smells and cigarette smoke. Not only do they leave your curtains smelling unpleasant, but they can also cause them to discolor a bit. It can be extra noticeable if your curtains are light-colored or made of delicate fabric.

Cleaning your curtains do not have to be a big mystery. Here are some helpful tips to help you clean your curtains effectively:

1. Vacuum or dust your curtains weekly. If you have heavy drapes, vacuum using the upholstery brush attachment. For lighter or more delicate curtains, shake them off or dust them so you don’t damage the fabric.
2. Check care labels before washing. If you’re unsure whether you should hand wash your curtains or put them in the washing machine, check the labels. A delicate cycle on your washing machine should be okay to use, but f you’re worried about shrinking the material, wash them by hand instead.
3. When in doubt, spot test. If you’re not sure if your color safe bleach or detergent will work, test it out on a small hidden corner. Most washable curtains are fine with the same laundry detergent you use on your clothes, but it helps to check first.
4. Hang curtains outside to dry. Allow them to dry naturally in a hanging position. This allows the creases to fall out. Also, avoid hanging them in direct sunlight so it doesn’t bleach. After they dry, all it needs is quick ironing.
